How much does dog training cost?

Dog trainer

People often ask: How much does dog training cost? Dog training does not have to cost much, because you can do it all by yourself and at your home. Or, if you prefer, you can get a professional dog trainer to train your dog for you and it can cost a lot! Or it can cost anything in between. You can decide what suits you the best.

The cost of dog training: Various options:

Professional dog trainer

If you get a professional dog trainer you will have to pay him per hour.  This can cost anything from $50 to $150 per hour. The best would be to get a few quotes and also references. Do your homework and make sure you get someone who you and your dog can get along with. But also someone with experience.  You don’t want to waste your money.

Joining a dog club

Normally dog club fees are paid annually and it is always very affordable. Mostly the trainers at these clubs are volunteers. Some might have years of experience, but others not so much. I do recommend joining a club, because here your dog will get a lot of socialization with other dogs. You can maybe join a club plus have a few one on one sessions with a more professional dog trainer.

You are the only trainer

If you go for this option you can minimize the cost of dog training. However I do recommend that you invest in a dog training program to guide you through the steps. You must be very consistent and persevering, especially if you have a dog that is not easily trained. You must establish a very strong bond with your dog but also make it clear that you are the Alpha.

Other costs of dog training to consider

You must make sure you have a collar that fits properly, a short lead as well as a long lead. Toys, balls, and treats are a must. You must have a moon bag that you can have on you with treats in. I recommend a clicker for clicker training. You can have a training mat, but you can also just use a bedside mat. These are basically all you need for basic obedience. Once you start agility training you will need to buy all the agility equipment. That can become expensive. If you are handy enough you can also make it yourself and save a lot. You can buy basic equipment from our STORE.

The most important thing to remember is you must be enthusiastic. Your dog will always be ready to train unless he is sick. But do not train if you are not feeling well! It must be fun!
